Richest Kenyan senators, businesses they own and net worth

The 2022 Knight Frank wealth report revealed the number of dollar millionaires in Kenya as of 2021 stood at 3,362.

This was an increase of 39 compared to the same period in 2020.

The same report indicated that Kenya had 88 ultra-high net worth individuals (UHNWIs), whose net worth was estimated at over Sh 3.4 billion.

According to the study, the wealthy were found to have invested their money across different sectors, including land and private residences (49%), overseas properties (19%), and crypto-assets (13%).

Kenyan members of parliament are among the richest in the continent, with their salaries set at between Sh 621,250 and Sh 710,000 exclusive of allowances. When allowances are factored in, their pay exceeds Sh 1 million.

We look at the richest Kenyan senators.

  1. Gideon Moi

Gideon Moi is the senator of Baringo county. He also doubles up as the chairman of the independence outfit, Kenya African National Union (KANU).

According to the Kroll report as reported by the Guardian, the lawmaker is worth over £550 million (Sh 79.4 billion).

Reports showed Gideon was the favourite son of Daniel Arap Moi, the late retired president who ruled Kenya from 1978 to 2002.

Moi accumulated massive wealth during his 24-year-rule allegedly through corruption.

Besides leaving behind multi-million properties in Kenya, he also had assets in London, New York, South Africa and Australia.

  1. Moses Wetang’ula

Wetang’ula leads the Ford Kenya Party, which is under the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

According to Pulselive, Wetang’ula’s net worth is estimated at Sh 2.4 billion.

The politician acquired most of his wealth through his long career in politics and law.

Wetang’ula is a partner in the Wetangula, Adan, Makokha & Company Advocates. He has also invested in the lucrative real sector through properties in Nairobi.

He owns a multi-million mansion in Karen and drives luxurious vehicles.

Ephraim Maina is the current Nyeri senator. He will face off with incumbent Mutahi Kahiga and other candidates in the August 9 gubernatorial race.

Maina is one of the richest politicians in Mt Kenya with investments across diverse sectors.

The Standard reported that he is one of the politicians who own choppers. These include the 5Y–PSM and 5Y–MNW helicopters.

He also runs the multimillion Kirinyaga Construction Company that has secured huge government tenders.

His gaffes and fight for multi-million wealth with his estranged wife Mary Keitany made headlines.

The former Igembe South MP who hopes to unseat Kiraitu Murungi as Meru governor owns multi-million properties across the country.

These include; Ridge Estate – worth over Sh 56 million, Kyuna Estate, Kitengela – worth Sh4.2 million, Kitengela International School, pieces of land worth over Sh 100 million in Kajiado county, and a plot in Runda.

  1. Charles Kibiru

The Kirinyaga senator is eyeing the county’s governor’s seat under the ruling Jubilee Party ticket.

Before his election into office in 2017 as an independent candidate, he ran his business having worked as a commercial director at Nairobi Water Company.

Kibiru is a co-founder of Thika Greens Golf Resort. The multi-million resort is located along Old Murang’a Road.
